Nannies on Call Tips: Hiring a nanny

Five tips for families to hire a super nanny! I’m Michelle Kelsey, owner of Nannies on Call. Today I am going to give families a few tips on common mistakes to avoid when hiring a nanny. Always check references. Many families do not check references, give up or get frustrated when they cannot reach the nannies references. It is important to get a minimum of two childcare references from each applicant. Even entry-level nannies will have references from camp, babysitting or volunteering. If a nanny is not able or willing to give references this should be your first red flag. Get a criminal record search. It is worth the extra step to have a criminal record check done. The nanny will be working in your home unsupervised with your child. Isn’t it worth the extra effort? Get it in writing. Many nanny placements break down due to a lack of communication, a contract will help to set out clear expectations of the job. The contract should outline job responsibilities, salary, work schedule and holidays. Pay your nanny overtime. You are legally required to pay your nanny overtime and break the pay out on his/her pay slip each month. These laws will differ based on where you live. Pay your nanny all year.
